The Ekolet toilet for year-round use composts both toilet and food waste and biologically cleans liquids. It also allows for the use of a hand shower. There is sufficient capacity for continual use by 1–7 people.

Normal Installation
Two seats

The toilet is made up of a pedestal in the washroom itself plus a rotating, four-compartment composting tank beneath the floor. The electrically assisted air circulation through the ventilation pipe keeps the toilet completely odour-free. The external appearance of the toilet is just like that of an ordinary water toilet. No additives are needed, and no sewerage pipes or water for flushing.

When one compartment in the composting tank is full, a thin layer of soil or compost is sprinkled over the top, and a new compartment rotated into position. Depending on amount of use, a new compartment is put into use, and the ready-to-use compost removed, at intervals of about a year. The compost is taken out through a hatch on the side; it is odourless fertilizer that can be spread straight onto plants. The biologically cleansed liquids, can be piped, along with household washing water, into a septic tank, and from there out into nature. In addition to the basic model (YV), we also provide a model equipped with a biological wastewater cleansing system (YV-B) for the most sensitive environment.

The Ekolet is simple and reliable in construction, and can also be used during prolonged power shortages. It contains no parts that could break or become blocked and prevent the use of the toilet. The need for floor space is small due to the vertical design. The Ekolet also effectively reduces the amount of the carcinogenic radon gas by improving the ventilation in the foundations of the house. The material is polythene plastic reinforced by steel and can be recycled.

General Issues Regarding to the Assembly of the Toilet

Check with the local municipal authorities whether or not you need a permit to install a composting toilet.

Underneath the toilet-room one must have a space for the composting tank of at least 130 cm x 130 cm square (125 cm x 125 cm when extremely tight) with a minimum height of 220 cm. This space should be warm and have a floor drain.

The composter is installed on a floor supported by four steel posts. The maximum weight of the composter is 1,400 kg.  The weight under normal usage is 700–800 kg.  All parts of the composter can be carried in through an opening of 60 cm x 130 cm.

The composter has an electric fan (8 W) that fans air into the 160 mm wide ventilation pipe attached to the lid of the composter at a rate of 50 cubic meters per hour. The ventilation pipe starting from the centre of the lid can be positioned according to the demands of the space. The ventilation pipe must always be directed upwards in such a manner that the ventilation may function naturally during electric shortages. It is advisable to insulate the ventilation pipe.

All liquids are extracted from the composter via an exhaust hose (ø 19 mm) and are lead to the floor drain and can be mixed with other household waste water (grey water). In the model with a bio-filter (YV-B), a liquid pump (28 W) is an integral part of the composter

The temperature of the space for the composting tank must be at least +15 degrees centigrade. On the other hand, the temperature of the plastic parts of the composter must not exceed +60 degrees centigrade.

One side of the composter must be accessible for emptying of the composter. A full composting compartment provides you with 150–200 litres of composted soil.

One 230 V 50/60 Hz electric outlet located indoors near the composter is needed.

The ventilation of the toilet is effected via the toilet seat and thus there should not be another ventilation opening in the upper part of the room.

The composter comes complete with all the necessary parts and instructions excluding the 160 mm diameter ventilation pipe.

The assembly of the EKOLET toilet is easy and one doesn’t need to have any special skills in electric installations or sewage assembly.

A composting toilet can be fitted with two toilet seats in such a manner that the waste is led into two compartments either next to each other or opposite each other. Your EKOLET representative will provide you with the extra seat.

The diameter of the composter is 1230 mm. The centre of sewage pipe (ø 200 mm) is 350 mm from the centre of the composter, 230 mm from the rear edge of the seat, and 295 mm from the front edge of the seat.
