The Ekolet VU contains a rotating four-compartment composting tank with a lid and a seat with a cover, both made of rigid plastic. The liquid is filtered through an intermediate floor into an evaporation tank. Air circulation via the ventilation pipe keeps the toilet odourless. When one compartment is full, a thin layer of soil or compost is sprinkled over the top, and a new compartment rotated into position. One compartment holds a summer’s worth of toilet and bio waste from a household of four persons. The apparatus can also be used in winter.

The apparatus requires no special maintenance – it only needs to be emptied of the ready-to-use compost. The Ekolet VU requires no electricity when installed into an outhouse. The apparatus is easy to install into both old and new outhouses.

The apparatus includes a sink for washing hands. Ekolet is manufactured from long-lasting, recyclable materials that leak no harmful substances to nature. An outhouse made from light timber is also available.

Technical information
The Ekolet outhouse may be freely placed on a lot since neither the toilet nor its potential overflow liquid will not have an unpleasant odour. The operation of the electricity-free apparatus is completely natural and therefore the sun and the wind further its operation. Part of the liquid will be evaporated and the biologically pre-cleansed liquid exiting from the overflow pipe can be lead to ground for absorption or mixed with wash water. A full compost compartment will yield approximately 50 litres of compost.

Openings will have to be made into the wall and the floor of the building, as shown in the picture. The building and its foundation must be sturdy, especially the studs in the rear. The composter will be a fixed part of the building and requires no separate foundation. The centre of the opening in the floor will be 10 cm in front of the studs, on the outside, as pictured. The upper part of the building needs to be leak-proof and there must be ventilation holes large enough near the floor (absolutely not the opposite). The light should enter from either the wall with the door or low from the sidewalls in such a way that the seat of the composter will be left in the shadow.
